Understanding Our Moving Insurance Policies

“What About Insurance? How Are Values Determined?”

No one wants to anticipate problems – loss or damage – during a move. However, even the best planned and executed move may encounter difficulties. It is important that you fully understand your movers’ liability in the event that any of your goods are lost or damaged during your move.

Additionally, A Wise Move carries the following insurance policies mandated by Arizona and the Federal Motor Carrier and Safety Administration

  • Commercial General Liability
  • Workers Compensation
  • Cargo Insurance
  • Auto Insurance
  • Bonded

A movers’ liability is governed by the valuation statement on the Bill of Lading, which is the contract for the move. There are two basic types of liability coverage that we offer:

Limited Liability or Released Value

This represents the minimum coverage required by law at $.60/lbs. This kind of basic coverage is designed to cover the mover’s basic liability. This is the most economical protection option available however this no-additional-cost option provides only minimal protection. Under this option, the mover assumes liability for no more than 60 cents per pound, per article. Loss or damage claims are settled based on the pound weight of the article multiplied by 60 cents. For example, if a 10-pound stereo component, valued at $1000 were lost or destroyed, the mover would be liable for no more than $6.00 (10 pounds x 60c). Obviously, you should think carefully before agreeing to such an arrangement. There is no extra charge for this minimal protection, but you must sign a specific statement on the bill of lading agreeing to it.

Full Value Protection

Full Value is our best valuation option. With this option, all items that are lost, broken or damaged will be (at the mover’s option) either repaired, replaced with like items, or cash settlement will be made for the cost of repair, or for the current market replacement value, regardless of the age of the lost or damaged item. Depreciation of the lost or damaged item is not a factor in determining replacement value when the shipment is moved under full value protection.
